Treesha, anak saya yang ke tiga punya sebuah "buku impian" yang ditulis diam2 di kamarnya. Kemarin, saya memperoleh privilege untuk membaca buku impian nya. Dan saya cukup kaget dengan apa yang ditulis anak saya. Isinya dahsyat, mulai dari nama SMP favorit (dengan tulisan besar2 dibawahnyaDiterima!), nilai yang ingin dicapai lulus SD nanti, dengan siapa dia ingin menikah (ya...padahal dia baru 9 tahun) keinginan punya pesawat terbang sendiri, rumah di Hollywood dan Itali, bahkan dicantumkan juga punya uangsebesar $ 96 trilyun. Ya, dia menulis dalam dollar dan nol dua belas. Bapak nya saja tidak berani bermimpi se-dahsyat itu. Hampir saja saya nyletuk : "Emang kamu siapa? Paris Hilton?"

Saya jadi teringat cerita ikon internet marketing Indonesia, Anne Ahira, sewaktu mengikuti seminar internet marketingnya beberapa waktu lalu. Ahira kecil juga adalah pengkhayal yang hebat. Saking ingin nya keliling dunia, ia pernah menempelkan foto diri nya di kalender yang berisi gambar2 kota dunia. Jadi waktu kecil Ahira sudah punya "foto" dirinya didepan obyek
wisata dunia, seperti misalnya di depan Golden Gate, Menara Eiffel, dsb. Gambar-gambar tadi di fotocopy dan ditempel di dinding. Ahira kecil ngotot, sekalipun Ibu nya mencoba meyakinkan bahwa keliling dunia hanyalah mimpi bagi anak seorang buruh pabrik dan penjual gado-gado.

Dan belakangan, Ahira dan Ibu nya menangis terharu setelah melihat foto Ahira yang dimuat di Kompas yang menggambarkan dia sedang di depan GoldenGate. Pose nya sama persis dengan foto khayalan Ahira sewaktu kecil. Luar biasa. Thoughts become Things.

Pikiran anak-anak memang sangat jernih. Saya yakin sewaktu kecil kita semua berani bermimpi dengan segala kepolosan kita. Tanpa ada ketakutan-ketakutan apakah mimpi kita akan menjadi nyata atau tidak. Barangkali konsep-konsep seperti : berpikir positif, law of attractions, dsb. sebenarnya sudah diinstall oleh Tuhan di otak kita semua sejak kita lahir. Hanya lambat laun
pikiran jernih tadi hilang. Hingga saat kita dewasa, seringkali sangat sulit untuk diinstall ulang.

Anak-anak berpikir dengan cara yang berbeda dengan kita. Ada sebuah cerita, seorang konsultan yang sedang membantu memecahkan masalah di sebuah perusahaan yang sudah listed di bursa suatu ketika ikut menghadiri manajemen meeting untuk memecahkan suatu masalah. Sang konsultan membuat sebuah titik di papan tulis. Dan bertanya: "gambar apa ini?". Seluruh anggota manajemen kompak dengan jawaban:"sebuah titik hitam di papan tulis
putih". Sang konsultan tiga kali mengulang pertanyaan yang sama, dan mendapat jawaban yang sama. Sang konsultan pun geleng-geleng kepala."Kemarin saya menanyakan pertanyaan yang sama di sebuat TK, dan mendapat 50 jawaban yg berbeda..." Ya, bagi anak-anak, titik hitam tadi dapat menjadi mata seekor burung, bola semut, lalat nemplok, dsb.

Kreatifitas para pemimpin puncak perusahaan tadi kalah jauh dengan anak TK. Padahal kreatifitas sangat diperlukan dalam memecahkan masalah. Tidak heran jika Picasso sampai pernah berkata: "Every child is an artist. The challenge is to remain an artist after you grow up". Ya, pelan-pelan kita berubah menjadi orang dewasa dengan meniadakan kehebatan cara berpikir anak-anak yang super kreatif itu.

Menurut pengamatan saya, anak-anak ternyata selalu menerapkan 3B yang seringkali sudah kita lupakan:

Berimajinasi

Anak-anak adalah gudang nya imajinasi. Hari ini mereka bisa menjadi guru, besok menjadi perawat, besok lagi menjadi pembalap, dsb. Hari ini bisa perang-perangan di tengah hutan, besok bisa di dalam pesawat angkasa. Imajinasi ternyata sangat penting dalam dunia pemasaran. Saya teringat cerita salah seorang teman saya yang pekerjaannya seorang marketer. Sebelum merumuskan strategi marketing. Bahkan jauh pada saat produk baru sedang di rumuskan, tim mereka berimajinasi. Misalnya dengan membayangkan bahwa
produk tadi adalah sesosok manusia. Berapa umurnya, apa hobby nya, pekerjaanya, kemana kalau "hang-out", minumnya apa, makanya apa, dst. Ini yang kemudian menjadi bahan untuk mengembangkan materi-materi iklan. Karena sudah memiliki imajinasi tentang "karakter" produk tadi, maka penyusunan program marketing menjadi lebih mudah.

Buat anak-anak, tidak ada yang tidak mungkin. Imajinasi mereka spontan dan tidak terlalu memikirkan "the how" nya. Karena bagi anak-anak semuanya mungkin terjadi. Justru orang dewasa yang sering "menyabotase" pikiran jernih mereka dengan kata2: "ah, mana mungkin".Bayangkan kalau cara berimajinasi anak-anak ini kita terapkan dalam menetapkan visi kita kedepan. Kita tidak akan diganggu dengan pikiran-pikiran negatif "ah mana
mungkin" tadi.

Bermain

Bagi anak-anak semuanya hanyalah permainan. Dengan demikian tidak ada "masalah" bagi anak-anak. Semua hal bisa dilihat dari sisi yang menyenangkan. Lihat saja, sewaktu bencana banjir di Jakarta yang baru lalu, anak-anak yang justru ceria bermain di tengah banjir. Anak-anak lebih pandai melihat sisi menyenangkan dari setiap "persoalan". Coba kalau ini
kita terapkan dalam keseharian. Betapa "persoalan" akan lebih mudah kita hadapi. Semua menjadi permainan yang menyenangkan.

Saya dulu punya teman yang hampir putus asa karena punya banyak hutang. Saya juga sudah bingung mau ngomong apa. Ketika saya ucapkan kata-kata:"its just a game man ?", ternyata dia langsung bangkit kembali. Dia mendapat inspirasi bahwa bisnis yg dia jalani toh hanyalah permainan. Bahwa skor nya saat ini minus, hanyalah skor, dan mulai sekarang dia bisa bermain
lebih bagus untuk mendapay skor yang lebih besar. Its just a game. And its fun!

Belajar

Siapa bilang anak-anak malas belajar. Justru mereka belajar setiap waktu. Saya pernah baca berita suatu penelitian di MIT yang menyimpulkan bahwa cara belajar anak2 itu seperti para scientist. Mereka sangat tertarik hubungan kausalitas. Bagaimana kalau saya melakukan ini, apa reaksi nya. Ini adalah dasar eksperimen. Dan banyak eksperimen yang mereka lakukan.
Bagaimana kalau mobil-mobilan ini ban nya dicopot? Bagaimana kalau rambut boneka Barbie ini dipotong, dsb. Rasa ingin tahu yang besar ini, sebenarnya bisa menjadi pendorong kesuksesan yang luar biasa jika kita pertahankan hingga dewasa.

Anak-anak belajar secara alamiah untuk menjadi lebih baik. Seorang bayi yang belajar berjalan, setiap kali jatuh akan bangkit kembali. Berapa kali seorang anak terjatuh dari sepeda? Apakah dia akan berhenti dan meratap. Tidak, dia akan tertawa, bangkit lagi, dan bersepeda lebih baik. Ini adalah proses belajar yang luar biasa. Berani mencoba, berani jatuh dan berani
mengevaluasi diri, ini yang sayangnya sering hilang pada saat kita menjadi manusia dewasa.

Jadi, kalau Anda sekarang adalah anak-anak, Anda mau menjadi siapa? Menjadi Spiderman? Batman? Donald Trump? Atau mau jadi Paris Hilton? Selamat berimajinasi.

Next up is Nusa Dua, a very pleasant change from Kuta (arguably molar extraction done with an angry ferret would also qualify as a pleasant change). Nusa Dua is home to the best beach we found, as well as the location of the larger well-known hotels, such as Hyatt and Sheraton. Prices are also highest here, though the low end costs we saw for Nusa Dua were similar to the high end costs in Sanur.

We liked Nusa Dua, but could understand that it may not fit with everyone’s idea of the right vacation. The area was bascially developed from scratch as a resort, and thus represents a vacation that is stronger on sun and sand and no-hassle days while making it a bit more of an effort to explore Bali than basing yourselves in Sanur.

Retailers are focusing their IT investments on supply chain efficiency this year in order to stay competitive, with radio frequency identification accounting for a growing amount of interest and investment, according to new research by the NRF Foundation, a nonprofit education and research arm of the National Retail Federation, and BearingPoint.

Forecasts for 2005, found that 53 percent of the more than 300 U.S. retailers surveyed put replacing and upgrading their merchandising and inventory-management systems as their top information technology strategic initiatives for 2005. In second place was replacing their point-of-sale (POS) terminals, with 38 percent of respondents making that their top priority.

RFID spending will be part of an increasing number of the companies' budgets for improving inventory management: 35 percent of companies indicated they will deploy the technology to some degree this year. That figure was up from just 15 percent in the same survey carried out last year.

"The retail community is clearly looking at RFID to see how real it is and whether or not it should be a strategic initiative," says Brian Higgins, director of supply chain strategy and emerging solutions at Bearing Point, a business consulting and systems integration company based in McLean, Va. The survey found that more than one third of the respondents were planning to deploy RFID at some level this year, and 11 percent of companies saw RFID deployment in 2005 as of key strategic importance. In addition, 50 percent of respondents said they would tag between 6 and 10 percent of their merchandise with RFID this year. The survey did not ask at which level (pallet, case or item) the tagging will take place. The other 50 percent, however, responded that they will tag no merchandise at all in 2005.

Among companies not investing in RFID, 65 percent said the technology is too expensive, 51 percent said it was too difficult to integrate and 48 percent said it was too complicated. According to BearingPoint, the survey, which was carried out in the fourth quarter of last year, covered a range of companies—from those with a single store to those with more than 2,000—but responses indicating investment in RFID were primarily from the largest retailers surveyed. The full study focused on nine areas, including store and field operations, supply chain, customer relationship management, merchandising, advertising and marketing, human capital, information technology and online.

Honda Products Lend A Helping Hand

Honda products are also actively involved in many environmental rescue missions. One mission we are particularly proud of is the use of our Honda ATVs to help the single most endangered species of sea turtle, the Kemp's-Ridley sea turtle. Joining a cooperative effort by the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and the government of Mexico, Honda donated sixteen all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) earlier this year to the Ridley Sea Turtle Recovery Project, underway since 1978.

Honda ATVs patrol beaches in South Padre Island, Texas, and more than 100 miles of remote beach in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Project team members comb the beaches for nesting turtles, mark the sites, tag turtles, and collect eggs and relocate them to a protected area away from poachers, both human and animal.

"The Honda ATVs have proven indispensable to accomplish this part of our job," said Dr. Pat Burchfield, U.S. Field Group coordinator. "We have used Honda all-terrain cycles exclusively for more than 23 years. Our fleet has grown from one unit in 1978 to more than 20 units which we operate under the harshest conditions imaginable."

Who needs to be educated HIV/AIDS ?

Anyone who is vulnerable to AIDS, and almost everyone is vulnerable, unless they know how to protect themselves. It's not only young people, injecting drug users or gay men who become infected - the virus has affected a cross-section of society. This means that education ought to be aimed at all parts of society, not only those groups who are seen as being particularly high-risk. It is all very well to educate young people but it's usually adults who become infected, and in the UK, for example, in recent years there has been very little AIDS education targeted at adults. The people who are most urgently in need of HIV education are those who think they're not at risk.

In 1987 in the UK, a leaflet about AIDS was delivered to every household, and the government also launched a major advertising campaign with the slogan "AIDS: Don't Die of Ignorance" This is an example of non-targeted education, or rather, education with a very broad target, intended to blanket the whole population. To plan an effective AIDS education strategy with smaller sections of the population, it helps to know the characteristics of the group who are to be educated. It is possible to identify four distinct groups of people who require targeted education:

People who have not yet been educated and may be at risk of becoming infected. This usually means young people, who need to know the risks involved in unsafe sex and drug use before they are old enough to find out for themselves.
People who have already been educated for whom the education was not effective. If AIDS education were completely effective, there wouldn't be nearly so many new infections. These infections do not only occur amongst young people - many people who have already experienced AIDS education continue to become infected with HIV.

"A few months after we started having unprotected sex, I fell gravely ill. . . I recovered slowly but . . . I guess the warning signs have been there since I fell sick earlier this year, I'm educated on HIV and some of my symptoms literally had the warning bells ringing inside my head. Still, the shock of discovering my status is something I will never wish on my worst enemy." TK, a South African woman

Everyone needs to learn how and why not to discriminate against positive people. People who are not HIV positive must learn about how the virus is transmitted in order that they are able to protect themselves from infection. At the same time, they must also learn how the virus is not transmitted. People need to know that they cannot become infected from such things as sharing food, towels or toilets. This will help to reduce discrimination against positive people by reducing ignorance and fear.
People who are already infected also require education. Initially, this must involve an element of counselling and support, and must teach them how about living well with HIV, the tests they may need to have and the medications they may need to take. They must also learn about HIV transmission and safer sex, for two reasons - they need to know how to live positively without passing the virus on to anyone else, and they need to know how to avoid coming into contact with a strain of the virus which differs from the one they are already have.
The only people who do not fall into one of these groups are those who have received AIDS education, have taken it in, and have the resources to turn knowledge into action. One group who should hopefully fall into this category are AIDS educators. This may seem obvious, but in many cases, teachers may require teaching themselves. They may be called upon to act as AIDS educators when they themselves have little experience or knowledge of the subject. Peer educators must also receive training, even if they themselves are HIV+. If AIDS education that had been done up until now had been fully effective, then there wouldn't have been five million new infections in 2002. It is clear that the campaigns carried out so far have failed to prevent the spread of the virus, so the message needs to be repeated, in different forms, until people appreciate it, or until, hopefully, education is no longer needed.

Samsung to spend $635 million on memory, LCD lines

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. the world's biggest memory chip maker, said on Monday it would invest 617.6 billion won ($635.1 million) on memory chip research and flat-screen production.
Samsung said in a filing to the stock exchange it would spend 388.2 billion won to expand research and development on dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and flash memory chips, as well as production of masks for semiconductors.

It will invest another 229.4 billion won in increasing production of small and medium-sized liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to meet growing demand, the South Korean company said.
Samsung is also the world's second-biggest maker of large-sized LCD displays after LG.Philips LCD. Co. Ltd.

The investment plans announced on Monday are part of an annual investment plan disclosed earlier.

Samsung had already said it planned a total of 9.23 trillion won in capital investment in 2006, including 5.63 trillion won earmarked for semiconductors and 2.37 trillion won for LCD.

ADHD Drug Dangers

Some of the most popular prescription drugs used to treat millions of Americans with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may be more dangerous than previously thought In fact, the FDA is considering new warning labels for the medications.

According to a troubling new Food and Drug Administration study, 25 people including19 children have died after taking the medications. Another 54 people have suffered serious heart problems, including heart attacks and stroke. The FA says it has tallied another 26 deaths between 1969 and 2003 in ADHD patients involving death by suicide, intentional overdose, drowning, heat stroke and from underlying disease.

The drugs getting a closer look include amphetamines, such as Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta. Sales of drugs to treat the disorder have jumped in recent years, with the biggest growth in use among adults. Spending on ADHD drugs has tripled in just four years, from $759-million in 2000 to $3.1 billion in 2004.

The regulatory agency has asked its Drug Safety and Risk Management advisory council to discuss the feasilbility of different ways of studying whether the deaths are linked to the drugs, as well as specific ways to conduct such studies. The few studies looked at longer-term use of ADHD drugs provide little information on those risks, according o the FDA.

Death and injury reports in Canada led to a six-month ban on the sale of the drug Adderall XR last year. That ban was later lifted, because there wasn't enough evidence of increased harm from the Adderall XR compared to other drugs.

Dr. Larry Diller is a behavioral pediatrician and author of the book, "Should I Medicate My Child?" He says, "Four million children take this medicine. That's approximately one in ten 11-year-old boys take this medicine. And the other thing that would be very worrisome is many of these children are barely affected at all. They either have mild cases of ADHD, or you'd look at them and they look normal." That said, however, Diller also says the FDA review has found that the risk of problems is just one for every 1 million ADHD prescriptions filled. Also in some cases, the children who died were later found to have undiagnosed heart conditions.

5. Jika terjadi gempa dan anda tidak dapat keluar melalui jendela atau pintu, maka berbaringlah meringkuk di sebelah sofa atau kursi besar.

6. Hampir semua orang yang berada di belakang pintu pada saat bangunan runtuh akan meninggal. Mengapa? Jika anda berdiri di belakang pintu dan pintu tersebut rubuh ke depan atau ke belakang anda akan tertimpa langit-langit di atasnya. Jika pintu tersebut rubuh ke samping, anda akan tertimpa dan terbelah dua olehnya. Dalam kedua kasus tersebut, anda tidak akan selamat!

7. Jangan pernah lari melalui tangga. Tangga memiliki "momen frekuensi"yang berbeda (tangga akan berayun terpisah dari bangunan utama). 8. Berdiri lah di dekat dinding paling luar dari bangunan atau disebelah luarnya jika memungkinkan. Akan lebih aman untuk berada disebelah luar bangunan dari pada di dalamnya. Semakin jauh anda dari bagian luar bangunan akan semakin besar kemungkinan jalur menyelamatkan diri anda tertutup.

9. Orang-orang yang berada di dalam kendaraan akan tertimpa jika jalanan di atasnya runtuh dan meremukkan kendaraan; ini yang ternyata terjadipada lantai-lantai jalan tol Nimitz. Korban dari gempa bumi SanFransisco semuanya bertahan di dalam kendaraan mereka dan meninggal. Mereka mungkin dapat selamat dengan keluar dari kendaraan dan berbaring di sebelah kendaraan mereka. Semua kendaraan yang hancur memiliki ruangan kosong yang aman setinggi 1 meter di sampingnya, kecuali kendaraan yang tertimpa langsung oleh kolom jalan tol.

Euro-zone inflation jumps in January

Inflation in the 12 nations using the euro accelerated to 2.4 percent in January from 2.2 percent the previous month, according to a first estimate from the EU statistical agency Eurostat.
This is the first rise since inflation spiked at 2.6 percent in September jumping up from 2.2 percent in August as pressure on oil supplies squeezed prices.

Eurostat did not explain the reasons for the increase but will publish more detailed information on prices on Feb. 28.

The European Central Bank's guideline is less than but close to 2 percent.Worries about price stability caused the ECB to raise its key interest rate for the euro zone to 2.25 percent from 2 percent in December, the first increase in five years.

The ECB is anxious to dampen inflationary pressure and is expected to raise rates again this year. However, EU finance ministers have said they do not see the fallout effects of higher oil prices such as demands for wage increases that would justify a series of rate increases.

Underlying inflation in December excluding energy and tobacco was running at a calmer 1.4 percent.

U.S. Workers Start Year with Measured Confidence

NEW YORK -- A recent economic index remained on par with December's 103.4 reading as U.S. worker confidence slipped just .8 points to 102.6 in January. The most notable change contributing to this slight decline was the flagging optimism about hiring amongst managers.

However, overall hiring expectations and job satisfaction held steady in January with only negligible shifts in employees' perceptions of their finances and job security. Buoyed by December's strong index, the latest reading is higher than most recorded in 2005, although well below the 107.0 reading in January 2005.

The survey also found that Hispanic workers were less optimistic than the overall workforce, as were people who work in the legal profession. The indexes for these sectors, segmented for the first time in this month's survey, stood at 98.1 and 100.4, respectively.

Managers were less confident about their firms' hiring plans in January than the previous month. Only 29 percent anticipated more hiring in the coming months, compared to 33 percent in December. They were also slightly less optimistic than workers overall, 30 percent of whom anticipated a boost in headcount (unchanged from December).

"Whereas we typically see a new year's increase, our polling indicates that workers are approaching this year with a 'wait-and-see' attitude," said Steve Wolfe, executive vice president, Hudson, North America, the company managing the index. "This is not a great cause for concern, though, as worker sentiment remains essentially unchanged from December, which showed increased optimism overall."
